When a Lithium Ion Battery is dead, can the Lithium in the battery be reused? When you have a lithium ion battery (computer/cell phone), is it possible for the lithium in the battery to be reused to make another battery (assuming it was recycled properly). I understand the concept of recycling. My question is specific to the usability of the lithium in a dead battery and if it can be reused to make another battery.

Are lithium batteries batteries quick on recycle time in flash? I current use AA Alkaline batteries in my Canon 580EX Speedlite flash. Because I need a quick recycle time I change them several times. I know lithium last longer but are they quicker????And are rechargeables any good for this purpose?

Avatar replied: "the Lithium batteries will do the best job. They will give you a faster flash recharge, as well as a longer battery life, but they won't likely be rechargable. As for rechargable batteries, don't use Alkaline rechargable, you'll just be wasting your time. NIMH rechargables are alright, but again, the Lithium battery will better accomplish with little hassle what you want it to accomplish."

about lithium-ion batteries? if you don't recycle lithium-ion batteries what will happen?

do you know of any place that buys used batteries? Im all about recycling batteries. But I recently had to change the battery in my 4-gas air monitor; it was $280 for a battery the size of a pack of gum. I was wondering if anyone knows of a place that refurbishes old batteries and may be interested in buying my old one. It is a Lithium-ion battery.

Why does a battery get hot after it's punctured? I found a broken cellphone and a lithium battery by the side of the road yesterday. I too it home, and out of curiosity, smashed it open with a hammer to see what's inside it (it's actually pretty cool. The inside of a cell-phone has an extraordinary amount of miniaturization in it, and in particular, the circuit board looks like a miniature version of the circuit boards I used to play around with as a kid). After I was done with that, I took a hammer to the battery (outside, of course, so that it wouldn't burn anything important), and to my surprise, not only did it start leaking a clear fluid and giving off an odor that reminded me of the acid my podiatrist used to treat my ingrown toenail, but it got really hot. So I was wondering, why did it get hot? Was it electricity stored in the battery (I'm not sure if the battery had power in it or not)? Was it heat from an exothermic reaction? And if the latter's the case, what was reacting? The metal covering of the battery? The paper and plastic covering? The concrete under it? I'm curious what was generating the heat. After I was done, I wasn't sure what to do with it (I don't think you can recycle punctured batteries) so I buried it, cleaned the hammer, and washed my hands. Also, I found today that I'd accidentally gotten a few drops on my shoe somehow and it burned the plastic covering of them (didn't go all the way through to my feet, but the shoes are ruined and I feel like a damn fool).

MontyH replied: "The lithium strip in the battery is water reactive. Normally, the battery is completely airtight, a puncture allows water vapor to get at the strip. As moisture in the air attacks the strip it forms lithium hydroxide, a strong caustic material and hydrogen gas. The reaction is what releases heat. Do not let your skin come in contact with either lithium or the end product hydroxide. If you do, rinse with LOTS of water; if your hands feel slippery, you still have hydroxide on you."

Are hybrids more environmentally unfriendly than gas engines in the long run considering battery disposal? I have worked in a Honda/Pontiac/Cadillac dealership for a number of years. As you may or may not know, Honda was the first US automaker to release hybrids in the US (2000 Honda Insight). They are advertised as better for the environment, but I wonder if they really are? The batteries in these things are expected to last about ten years. They still run on gas, but get between 20-30 % better gas mileage (all makes get this - even a Prius). What do you do with the batteries after they expire? I can't imagine they can be recycled, and I would also imagine that they would be very hazardous to the environment. It may not seem like much of an impact as there are only 200,000 hybrids on the US roads, but what happens if 10 years out we are looking at millions of these things? Is a 20-30% savings in gas mileage (at most) worth adding all these used lithium ion batteries to the environment? And I am sure someone will say, "you have to replace a car battery in a car every 3-5 years anyway", but Hybrids still have a regular battery (which makes a total of two)

Is there a Canadian "American Inventors" show? I'd like to present our electric vehicle that runs off discarded batteries on a Canadian TV show. Is there one? Here's what I'd like to bring to a "Canadian Inventors" show.. My electric pickup runs on 30-cents/day discards Gary Tang and Rob Matthies created the world's first road-licensed pickup that runs on 30 cents a day. Compare that to the $10,000/year or more it would cost, if this pickup was powered by Lithium Ion batteries, like one famous actor's car. .. .. This electric vehicle uses no gasoline, no petrol, and runs on DISCARDED BATTERIES, thereby reducing industrial processing a.k.a. "battery recycling". There are several battery breakthroughs on this EV. What we need now is some large funders to scale this up to a commercial scale. At the show, we hope that the judges will want to throw us some bux.

behnt replied: "Yes on CBC there is a show called Dragons Den on wed nights at 8pm MST Ben"

Jose S replied: "DISCARDED BATTERIES IS NOT THE ANSWER! The Best electric car up to now is in Europe a Cadillac SRX 4x4 and this car is not allow to be seen by anyone. The test is done on Sunday from 6 PM to 6 AM only and use not batteries but ultra cell floor able to carrie 1.2 megawatt of power but you can see the inventor at plus many fantastic solution for the industry and the armed forces."

What is the environmental hazard of various batteries? I would like information about whether batteries like, Ni-Cad, Alkaline, Lithium are recyclable or if they become hazardous waste. Which has the lowest impact with/without recycling?

What is wrong with my Nikon Flash? My wife and I took pictures at a wedding last night and had many problems with both flashes. (1) SB-800 and (1) SB-600. With a fresh pack of AA Energizer Lithium batteries I was only able to get about 10 flashes at a time after the recycle time ballooned to about 1 minute!!! I've read that speedlights sometimes need cooling off periods, but not after 10 pops right? Does this have more to do with the batteries or is there a problem with the flash? There were similar problems with the SB-600 also. I researched the Quantum Turbos and am not interested in spending more on the battery than I did on the flash. I just need something that will give me about 30-40 pops an hour for about 4 or 5 hours. Any suggestions? I heard there are some cables that will allow the flash to connect to the camera and run off the camera battery. I dont think this is possible with the SB-600. The SB-600 is connected to a D40X and the SB-800 is connected to a D-300. FYI: I was not using the 5th Battery FYI: shooting in TTL/BL at about anywhere between f4 and f9

George Y replied: "I'd check the batteries. Using generic Walgreen's Alkaline AA batteries in my SB600, I've been able to take many more photos than you have on my D70 or D200. I always keep ziplock bags with 4 batteries each in my camera bag for quick changing. When the recycle time slows down, or I know I've got a flurry of flash shots coming up, I switch batteries. Hope this helps."
